2012 Pikes Peak Region Sustainability Plan: Looking to Our Future

“Looking to Our Future – Pikes Peak Region 2030” (PPR 2030) was developed as a living strategy and vision of the future of the Pikes Peak Region.  It is based on principles of sustainability. PPR 2030 takes a regional approach because we recognize that our community works best when we work together. As a result, the document does not duplicate ongoing sustainability efforts.  Instead, PPR 2030 provides a framework by which our local governments, institutions, businesses, and individuals can coordinate, collaborate, and find regional solutions to regional challenges.

The Fountain Creek Watershed Flood Control and Greenway District was created under SB09-141, established under Title 32 of the CRS. The boundaries, governance, and powers and duties of the District are established through this legislation. The District is authorized to manage, administer, and fund the capital improvements necessary in the Fountain Creek Watershed to:

  • Mitigate flooding, erosion and sedimentation
  • Address water quality issues
  • Improve drainage
  • Protect open spaces
  • Develop public recreational opportunities including open spaces

United Way is a nonprofit organization whose vision is to enhance youth success and family stability in the Pikes Peak Region by leading and lifting the most vulnerable in our community with mentorship, life resources and real job opportunities.

The local United Way conducts annual quality of life reports called Peak Progress. This is a community effort to look at and evaluate different components of quality of life in the Pikes Peak Region. This project convenes volunteers, community members and leaders from across the region (Vision Councils) to gather and evaluate data and create goals (referred to as “Priority Areas”) in various categories.

PlanCOS

This is our community’s Plan for the physical development of Colorado Springs. We expect it to be used and referenced as our city and community develops over the coming decades. Our citizens understand how important it is to plan for the future. The use of this Plan allows us to grow and adapt to a future that is predictable in some cases and uncertain in others. Our Plan should be used to support and not to restrain the market, private initiative, strategic public investment, and innovation. Our Plan ensures that Colorado Springs will continue to be one of the great cities of our nation.

ConnectCOS

ConnectCOS – the first citywide multimodal transportation planning effort in two decades – is an in-depth assessment of the state of the Colorado Springs transportation system based on technical analysis and input from the public to establish a long-term plan for ensuring the system continues to serve the community well for the next two decades. The process and the resulting plan document the analysis, public input to the process, and outcomes and recommendations necessary to implement this plan. The transportation plan also supports the vision for the community developed through the public process of PlanCOS, the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Adopted in 2019, this community and land use plan documented six key themes on which the community is focused.
